I design and sew sustainable clothing.
But what does that mean?
focus on my impact
how is the way that I make things effecting others?
emphasize my process
how can my guidance teach others to do better too?
make use of everything
how can I eliminate waste and create the best I can?
remember to be grateful
who has helped me and how can I help them in turn?
Old & New, and New Again
I aim, with this business, to create “new” designs using “old” materials (old and new are fairly subjective, but we can get into that later). I use strictly second-hand and vintage fabrics, only ones which are “rescued for re-use” at Sew Green Rochester or Craft Bits & Pieces in Fairport— my most treasured resources in my local upstate NY community. So, that’s the old part.
Onto the new; I design with my entire end result in mind, this means the piece that I am creating matters just as much as the waste that I may produce while making it. A lot of my time is spent, frankly, messing around and trying things. As I have little technical training, I play with sewing patterns that I find at used craft supply shops and thrift stores. I also like to draw a pattern by eye with chisel tip sharpie on kraft wrapping paper, and test the fit until it’s just right.
